Joseph Zammit Tabona re-elected FOI president

At a recent council meeting Joseph Zammit Tabona was elected President of the F.O.I. for the third year running.

The full FOI Council for the year 2002 includes Deputy President Anton Borg, four Vice-Presidents – Andy Gatesy; Ian J. Mizzi; Adrian R. Bajada; and Joseph Pace; and members:- Anthony Diacono; Helga Ellul; Martin Galea; Gene E Gretchen; Godwin C. Micallef; David Mifsud; Joseph L. Pace and Anthony J Tabone.

Five of these, Anthony Diacono, Martin Galea, Gene Gretchen, David Mifsud, and Anthony Tabone, were not on the FOI Council last year, while Joseph Pace is serving for the first time as Vice-President.

Mr Zammit Tabona was born in 1944 and was educated at St Edwards College, Malta. He was articled with Turquand Youngs & Co. in London and qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1971. Mr Zammit Tabona became partner of the local branch of Turquand Youngs & Co. in 1972 and was a senior partner of PricewaterhouseCoopers until his retirement from active practice in March, 2000.

Mr Zammit Tabona is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, a Fellow of the Malta Institute of Accountants, an Associate Member of the Institute of Taxation and also has a warrant to practise as a Certified Public Accountant and Auditor.

He is appointed by Government as Chairman of the Malta Accountancy Board, as a Director on the Board of the Malta Development Corporation, and Council Member of the Malta Council for Science and Technology. Mr Zammit Tabona is also a Director of HSBC Life Assurance Co. Ltd in Malta. With effect from lst January, 2002 he has also been appointed Executive Director of the Malta Enterprise Board.

Mr Zammit Tabona was elected President of the Malta Federation of Industry (FOI) in February 2000 after having served for a previous term in this capacity between 1990 and 1992. He is also a Director, representing the Federation, on the Board of Malta External Trade Corporation(METCO) and of the Institute for the Promotion of Small Enterprise (IPSE). Mr. Zammit Tabona also represents the interests of the FOI on the Malta Council for Economic and Social Development. He was first elected to the Council of the Malta Federation of Industry in 1980. He was Honorary Treasurer of the Federation in 1980/81 and 1988/89. He has also served the Federation in other posts such as Chairman of the Economic Affairs Committee and as a member of the Legal and Statute Revision Committee.

Mr Zammit Tabona was a Member of the Board of Directors of Bank of Valletta Limited between 4 May 1992 to 19 December 1997. During the time he was a Director of the Bank he was a member of the Bank's Finance Committee and was Chairman of the Compliance Committee between August 1992 to August 1995 and Chairman of the Purchasing Committee between September 1995 and December 1997.
