Skal Malta announces Tourism award

World Tourism Day in September is promising to be a special day for the travel and tourism industry as Skal International – Malta, in conjunction with a leading media organisation, is preparing to award a number of people involved in different categories of the industry for their initiative and work.

The announcement was made yesterday at a ceremony, which saw renowned hotelier Albert Muscat Inglott being awarded the Spirit of Skal 2002 Award.

Skal President Joe Borg Olivier presented the award, which recognises Mr Muscat Inglott’s relentless initiative and support to the tourism industry in Malta.

Skal is an international organisation of managers and executives that brings together all sectors of the travel and tourism industry. It was founded in Paris in 1932 and numbers 25,000 members in over 500 clubs spread in more than 80 countries. The Spirit of Skal Award was first introduced in Malta in 1999 and has been awarded annually since then. But over the past year the committee has been working to create a national award to give recognition to the tourism industry in general, which some contend has not been given the recognition it deserves despite its importance to the Maltese economy.

The awards will be given in relation to a number of categories that will include transport, accommodation, incoming and outgoing tourism, entertainment, academic and professional interests, food and beverage suppliers, best promotion and the entrepreneur in tourism.
