The EU and the Mediterranean

The Mediterranean region, surrounded by three Continents is of strategic importance to the European Union. Nevertheless, there is little effective dialogue between various players in the EU25, such as SMEs and NGOs on how Mediterranean issues are affecting them.
The expression ‘Mediterranean security’ is often taken from a European viewpoint, namely challenges to Western Europe originating from the southern Mediterranean rim and resulting in two opposing security perceptions between the two sides of the Mediterranean. Moreover, cooperation within the EU is in many respects event-driven, triggered by crises and seldom based on a thorough analysis of the situation and consequently often ineffective and susceptible to meet a lot of political and social resistance.
This has left a vacuum in one of the Western world’s most problematic regions, and which has in recent times been the source of the most direct attacks on Western society.
The SecureMED conference is being held on the 16th November to precede the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) Parliamentary assembly 2006 Fall Meeting which is being held in Malta from Friday 17 November to Sunday 19 November.
