Gozo Channel to lower rates for Maltese passengers

Karl Schembri

Fares for Maltese passengers travelling by ferry to Gozo are expected to go down in the coming days as the Gozo Channel management is preparing to announce new rates in a bid to increase traffic to the sister island in the low season.
Sources say the company is planning to offer fares to Maltese passengers travelling in the afternoons similar to those offered to Gozitan residents, between December 2006 and May next year. If implemented, the standard passenger fare would go down from Lm2 to 50c.
Gozo Channel General Manager Marvic Fenech Adami would not confirm or deny the expected fare changes but said the company will be making any announcements through a press conference.
A spokesman for Investments Minister Austin Gatt said the idea has been discussed between the ferry line, the Gozo Ministry and Gozitan stakeholders including the Gozo Business Chamber and the Gozo Tourism Association.
“Various ideas on how to increase travel to Gozo were discussed,” the spokesman said. “The ministry and Gozo Channel are considering these ideas … and will be taking a decision shortly.”
