Malta Institute of Management presents research paper to Minister for Tourism

During a meeting between the Minister for Tourism, Hon. Dr. Francis Zammit Dimech and the Malta Institute of Management, Dr. Vanessa Borg, presented her research paper on Stewardship Drive for Performance Optimisation In The Hospitality Industry.
During her presentation, Dr. Borg explained how her findings and tools may be applied to the tourism industry, not only within the Hotel Sector but also in authorities, the public sector as well as other industries. The research carried out, using a sample of twelve independent units operating in six different geographic locations, surfaced the need for stewardship drive as a crucial differentiator in performance. The bottom line was that stewardship supported the harnessing of an environment where people wanted to work, and subsequently wanted to make the organisation a better place for those yet to follow. Following a structured performance management model, employees played a key role in aligning their tactical actions towards the organisation’s vision, ultimately yielding to higher performance achievements.
The Minister congratulated Dr. Borg for her achievements and discussed certain parts of the paper with Dr, Borg. He discussed particularly the increase in performance achieved through the application of the tools analysed in the study.
Mr. Lawrence Mizzi, President of the Malta Institute of Management explained to the Minister how the Institute continues to support research in the area and how it encourages its members to actively engage into research and apply such research in practice. Mr. Mizzi explained to the Minister how MIM is conducting, encouraging and promoting various research in the Tourism sector. In fact, the Institute has published another research paper recently in collaboration with the Parliamentary Secretary for Small Business, Hon Edwin Vassallo.
Mr. Reuben Buttigieg discussed with the Minister the development of the training and education within the tourism industry. The MIM , said Reuben Buttigieg, is constantly contributing to the Tourism Industry by training our resources. Twenty percent of the training activity of the MIM has been directed to the tourism industry. This mainly through individuals taking the various educational programmes such as Masters and Diplomas as well as customised programmes. The MIM congratulated the MTA for their training activities in the sector as well and said that MIM looks forward to collaborating and joining forces in order to achieve the common goals of the two organisations. The Minister and MIM shared their views on how education may develop in the sector.
At the end of the very cordial meeting, the Minister congratulated MIM and Dr. Vanessa Borg for their valid contribution to the Tourism Sector. Particularly, the Minister congratulated Dr. Borg and encouraged her to maintain the professionalism, the drive and foresight she has shown in delivering such paper. The Industry needs more of similar studies.
