Employment in the public sector at its lowest in 20 years

Official statistics indicate that the percentage of those employed with the public sector are at an all-time low and stands at 30.51 per cent. The figure is expected to fall even further with the inclusion of Maltapost employees in the private sector segment. In 1987 the public sector employment stood at 44.43%.
Twenty years later, the percentage of those working with the private sector has shout up to 69.49% from 55.57%. 13.92 per cent have shifted from public employment to work with the private sector over a twenty year period. The statistical observation will serve to boost the Prime Minister’s budget speech planned for next Monday. BusinessToday will be published on Tuesday next week, and on Wednesday the Prime Minister will be a guest speaker at the Go Today seminar.

In the 12 months until June 2007, employment in the public sector went down by 597. In the private sector an increase was registered and it was 1,184 persons. Part-time employment rose by 3,130 individuals, of these 1,948 consider their part-time job as their primary occupation.
In the public sector the largest drop was in transport, storage and communication, whereas the largest increases were in public administration and health and social work.
The biggest increase in the private sector was in real estate, renting and business activities; 1,202 in all.
On the other hand there was a drop in the number of people working in hotels and restaurants and manufacturing, 307 and 332 respectively.
