Local Councils meet European counterparts

Mark Causon

Upon his return from the meeting of the Committee of the Regions in Brussels, Local Councils Association (LCA) President Michael Cohen said he was satisfied with the outcome of this year’s meeting.
“Considering that this was the first time that the LCA participated in this annual event, the number of persons visiting our stand was bigger than expected,” he said.
The “Investors’ Café” was officially inaugurated by the President of the Committee of the Regions Luc Van den Brande and Commissioner Danuta Hübner.
Following the official launch, both the President and the Commissioner visited the Malta stand, where LCA Executive Secretary Jimmy Magro presented them with a book as a memento.
LCA Deputy President Claudette Abela Baldacchino said: “The Investors’ Café, held in the Committee of the Regions Jacques Delors Building in Brussels, acted as a unique forum for communication and a meeting place between private and public companies and regions and cities, enabling them to discover the rich diversity and economic attractiveness of European regions/cities and to identify investment and job creation opportunities.”
The participants who attended the Investors’ Café included elected politicians from regional and national authorities, MEPs, European Commissioners, officials from EU institutions and from regional and local administrations, representatives of the banking sector, public and private companies, business entrepreneurs and corporations. The Investor’s Café is a service to European entrepreneurs and representatives of the regions and cities, enabling them to forge links with a view to opening up opportunities for partnership.
Abela Baldacchino also said that the Association was also proud that the Junior Minister Chris Saidc accepted an invitation to visit the event and to visit our stand. Said was accompanied by the Secretary General of the Committee of the Regions Gerard Stahl as well as Permanent Representative of Malta to the EU Richard Cachia Caruana.
As part of the event, a seminar was also held at the Jacques Delors Building, where the Committee of the Regions is held. This was followed by a reception hosted by Cachia Caruana himself. During the performance, Maltese singer La Barokka entertained those present with her repertoire.
Present for the Maltese seminar and reception were also President for the Congress for Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe Yavuz Mildon and Ulrich Boher, Secretary General for the same Congress.
