Charlot Zahra

Figures from the latest Annual Audit Report for 2007 tabled in the House of Representatives by Auditor-General Anthony C. Mifsud recently showed that government departments and entities were owed more than €1.1 billon in arrears at the end of last year.
The department that had the most glaring arrears figure at the end of 2007 was, as expected, the Inland Revenue Department, which collects Income Tax, with €731,193 million in outstanding revenue.
This figure alone constitutes more than 70 per cent of the total arrears figure for the year.
Another major culprit is the Value Added Tax (VAT) department, which at the end of 2007 had €280,306 million in tax arrears still uncollected, which accounts for another 20 per cent of the total arrears figure for last year.
Next in line there was the Capital Transfer Duty department, which collects stamp duty on transfer of assets, with €36,903 million in arrears at the end of 2007.
Another department which had a substantial amount of arrears to collect at the end of last year was the Customs Department with around €14,865 in arrears.
The law courts in Malta still had more than €9 million in fines, dues, and court fees to collect at the end of 2007, while the law courts in Gozo had €348,480 in arrears to collect at the end of last year.
